Sharing my recent Meta E5 interview experience. Hope it helps people preparing.

Background:

Bay Area

Backend / Distributed Systems

About 7 years of experience

Target level: E5 Senior Software Engineer

Preparation time: About 6 weeks

Overall impression:

Meta E5 doesn't lean especially heavily on hard algorithms. It looks more at a senior engineer's overall ability: consistent coding, depth in system design, and ownership.

Timeline:

Week 0:

The recruiter contacted me. We mainly discussed:

background

current level

team preference

interview process

Week 2:

Technical screen

Coding:

An interval-related variation and a tree/graph problem.

The difficulty was around LeetCode medium.

I felt Meta's coding interviews mainly tested:

whether your reasoning is clear

whether you consider edge cases

whether you can quickly write bug-free code

Don't focus only on the optimal solution. Make sure you communicate with the interviewer.

Week 4:

Onsite

Coding Round 1:

A problem based on a production scenario, involving cache / rate-limit design.

The follow-ups mainly covered:

what to do as data volume grows

what to do with multiple machines

how to handle failure cases

Coding Round 2:

A graph / dependency problem.

Follow-ups:

large-scale data

concurrent execution

how to optimize

System Design:

Problem:

Design Notification System

We mainly discussed:

storage choice

fanout strategy

handling high traffic

reliability

I felt the biggest difference between E5 and E4 system design was that they weren't only looking at whether you could produce a design. They wanted to see whether you considered long-term maintenance, trade-offs, and production issues.

Behavioral:

I prepared a few stories:

the project where I had the biggest impact

a disagreement with a teammate

a failure

how I drove collaboration across teams

I'd recommend preparing these in advance.

For E5, they don't particularly want to hear only "what I participated in." They want to hear:

what you were responsible for

why you did it that way

what impact it ultimately had

Offer:

In the final package, I mainly negotiated equity. There was limited room to change the base salary.

I'd suggest not giving your target number too early. Having a competing offer makes negotiation easier.
