Does HireVue Record Your Screen? Coding and Video Assessment Privacy
Does HireVue record your screen? Learn when screen sharing, camera, microphone, and coding activity may be captured and what candidates should check.
Updated August 22, 2026. HireVue products and employer settings can change. Your invitation, setup screen, permission prompts, and the hiring company's privacy notice are the source of truth for your assessment.
A HireVue invitation can create an awkward privacy question before you even think about the interview: Is HireVue recording my camera, my microphone, my code, or my entire screen? The honest answer is not a universal yes or no. HireVue supports several interview and assessment formats, and the employer decides which experience and permissions apply.
The short answer: a standard recorded video interview captures the response you submit through your camera and microphone. Some On Demand tasks and Live interviews explicitly ask you to share your screen. A technical assessment can also preserve code, test results, and activity inside the coding environment, but that is different from silently recording every pixel on your desktop.
Prepare before the assessment instead of guessing what a reviewer might detect.
Quick answer: Does HireVue record your screen?
HireVue can support screen sharing, but its official candidate guidance does not say that every HireVue interview continuously records the candidate's whole screen. HireVue says some On Demand interviews require screen sharing for a task, and a candidate may also be asked to share during a Live interview. Those situations involve an explicit screen-sharing step and compatible browser permissions.
Do not confuse that with the ordinary camera recording used for an On Demand video response. Also do not confuse code-editor playback or browser-focus events with a movie of your full desktop. They are different data sources with different privacy implications.
| HireVue activity | What may be captured | How you should know |
|---|---|---|
| On Demand video response | Your submitted camera and microphone response | The setup requests camera and microphone access and shows a preview. |
| On Demand task with screen sharing | The screen, window, or tab you select for the task | The interview explicitly asks you to share and the browser opens a screen-selection prompt. |
| Live interview | Live camera and microphone; screen content only when sharing is used | The meeting controls show camera, microphone, and a Screenshare action. |
| CodeVue or technical assessment | Submitted code, test activity, timing, and potentially editor or integrity signals | The challenge instructions and assessment policy explain the permitted tools and monitoring. |
Four different things candidates call "recording"
Most confusion comes from using one word for four separate features. A browser may request camera, microphone, or screen-capture permission, while the assessment records an answer or stores coding events.
1. Recorded video answers
An On Demand interview records responses without a live interviewer on the other side. The company selects the questions. HireVue says requests to view a submitted recording go through the hiring company.
2. Camera and microphone access
HireVue's current support instructions explain that camera and microphone access must be allowed when the interview requires them. This permission lets the browser capture the response or carry a live call. It does not, by itself, grant permission to capture the desktop.
3. Explicit screen sharing
Some On Demand tasks and Live interviews may require screen sharing. The browser should ask which screen, window, or tab to share. On a Mac, the operating system calls this permission Screen Recording.
4. Technical-assessment activity
HireVue's technical-assessment materials describe coding challenges, similarity detection, and playback. Older official CodeVue documentation describes paste, test-run, inactivity, and browser-focus events. These signals can reconstruct activity inside a coding session without proving that every other application was recorded.
Does HireVue record the screen in an On Demand interview?
Sometimes, for a task that is configured to use screen sharing. HireVue's official screen-sharing article uses careful language: some On Demand interviews require candidates to share while demonstrating a skill. That is materially different from saying every recorded interview captures the whole desktop.
If screen sharing is required, expect an instruction and a browser selection dialog. Read it before choosing a source, then share only what the task requests.
If no screen-sharing request appears, do not invent one from the presence of camera or microphone permissions. Those are separate browser controls. If the invitation is unclear, ask the recruiter before the assessment starts.
Does HireVue record the screen during a coding assessment?
A coding assessment may preserve more than the final source file, but code playback is not automatically full-screen video. HireVue has described playback, similarity analysis, timing, paste events, test runs, and browser-focus changes as technical-review signals.
The exact CodeVue setup varies by employer. HireVue says the hiring company chooses the language, due date, and retake decision, so check your challenge introduction instead of copying assumptions from another company.
Use only resources the instructions allow. Do not try to test which controls are active, suppress monitoring, or create a cleaner-looking activity trail. Solve the problem honestly, test it deliberately, and be prepared to explain the code in a follow-up conversation.
Can HireVue see tab switching, copy-paste, or your keystrokes?
HireVue has described editor playback, paste activity, test runs, inactivity, browser-focus events, and code-similarity signals. Assume work inside a technical challenge may be reviewable when those features are enabled.
It is less accurate to jump from that evidence to "HireVue can read everything I type everywhere." The public materials support editor and session signals, not a universal claim that every unrelated keystroke or private application is captured. A focus-change event can show that the assessment lost focus without revealing the contents of the other window.
The practical rule is simple: keep the assessment in focus and follow the stated resource policy. If documentation, notes, or an IDE are allowed, use them only in the way the employer describes.
What employers may receive after HireVue
The output depends on the product. Reviewers may receive submitted video responses and evaluation information, or code, results, timing, and available playback or integrity signals. A Candidate Insight Report may also summarize job-related results.
HireVue says the hiring company remains responsible for the hiring decision. Its candidate FAQ also explains that the company controls access to submitted interview recordings. Therefore, "HireVue recorded it" and "every recruiter watched every second" are not equivalent statements.
A reviewer may start with a score or summary and open detailed evidence only when needed. You should still assume that anything intentionally submitted in the assessment can be reviewed by the employer.
Privacy, retention, deletion, and consent
HireVue says assessment and interview data is kept for a period selected by the hiring company, then automatically purged. Candidates seeking deletion should contact the employer that controls the recruiting data.
HireVue's privacy policy describes rights that may apply by location, including access, correction, deletion, portability, restriction, and objection. The employer's hiring notice remains more specific to your assessment.
Before granting permissions, read the consent language and the employer's candidate privacy notice. If you want access, deletion, or clarification, contact the recruiter or the employer's privacy channel first. HireVue lists privacy@hirevue.com for questions about its own processing.
A privacy-safe pre-assessment checklist
Good privacy hygiene is not monitoring evasion. It means understanding the requested access and avoiding accidental exposure of information unrelated to the interview.
- Read before accepting: identify camera, microphone, screen-sharing, identity, and data-use notices before the timer begins.
- Test the exact browser: confirm the camera, microphone, speakers, network, and screen-sharing preview in the supported setup.
- Close private material: dismiss personal messages, health or financial documents, password managers, client data, and confidential work.
- Use a neutral workspace: stop notifications and choose a clean background so unrelated information does not appear accidentally.
- Confirm the resource policy: ask whether documentation, notes, external IDEs, AI tools, or a second monitor are permitted.
- Request accommodations early: contact the employer if a disability, assistive technology, shared space, or device constraint affects the standard setup.
If a permission request is broader than you expected, pause before starting and ask what is required. Declining a necessary permission may make the assessment unavailable, but that does not mean you must guess about the policy under a running timer.
Practice the interview before HireVue opens
Each title in the first column opens the question and written solution.
| Question | Practice focus | Why it helps |
|---|---|---|
| Explain a Technical Decision and Transferable Team Practice | Alternatives, trade-offs, and evidence | Builds a clear technical explanation that works in a recorded or live follow-up. |
| Explain a Challenging Project End-to-End | Ownership, architecture, and measurable impact | Trains a structured project answer without reading from a script. |
| Answer Common HM Behavioral Prompts | Conflict, failure, prioritization, and role fit | Creates reusable stories for typical HireVue video questions. |
| Describe a Favorite Project and Its Hardest Technical Challenge | Technical depth and follow-up readiness | Helps you explain one difficult decision instead of giving a shallow project tour. |
Record yourself once, review clarity and timing, then answer again from a short outline rather than memorizing a script.
A seven-day HireVue preparation plan
| Schedule | Focus | Concrete result |
|---|---|---|
| Day 1 | Read the invitation and privacy notice | List the interview format, permissions, deadline, attempts, and permitted resources. |
| Day 2 | Test the environment | Confirm browser, camera, microphone, screen sharing, lighting, network, and support route. |
| Day 3 | Build behavioral stories | Draft four outlines covering impact, conflict, failure, and prioritization. |
| Day 4 | Practice recorded responses | Deliver four answers in 60 to 120 seconds without reading a script. |
| Day 5 | Run a coding diagnostic | Solve two timed problems and log every edge-case or implementation error. |
| Day 6 | Combine code and explanation | Solve one problem, then explain approach, complexity, tests, and trade-offs aloud. |
| Day 7 | Complete a final preflight | Close private material, silence notifications, confirm rules, and start rested. |
Frequently asked questions
Does HireVue record your whole screen without asking?
HireVue's official candidate guidance describes explicit screen sharing for some On Demand tasks and Live interviews. It does not support a blanket claim that every HireVue session silently records the whole desktop.
Does HireVue use the webcam during a coding assessment?
It depends on the employer's assessment configuration. If camera access is required, the setup should request permission. Do not assume that a CodeVue challenge and a recorded video interview use identical permissions.
Does the Mac "Screen Recording" permission mean HireVue records everything?
Not by itself. macOS uses "Screen Recording" as the system permission category that lets a browser share screen content. The actual shared source and duration depend on the screen-sharing flow you accept.
Can HireVue detect tab switching?
HireVue has documented browser-focus events and coding-session playback in technical-assessment materials. That is not the same as seeing the contents of every other tab, but you should avoid unapproved navigation.
Are HireVue practice recordings saved?
HireVue's candidate practice FAQ says practice questions and recordings are not uploaded or submitted to others and disappear after playback. Actual interview responses are different and are submitted to the hiring company.
How long does HireVue keep interview data?
HireVue says retention is based on the period selected by the hiring company. Ask the employer for the specific period and send deletion requests through the employer's recruiting or privacy channel.
Final takeaway
HireVue recording is feature-specific and employer-configured. Video responses use camera and microphone capture. Some tasks explicitly request screen sharing. Technical assessments can preserve code and session activity. None of those facts justifies the broader claim that every HireVue assessment secretly records an entire computer.
Read the notice, grant only the permissions the stated assessment requires, protect unrelated private information, and ask when something is unclear.
